Volta Ciclista a Catalunya
Stage 6
Valls>Vila-Seca, 169km

Vila-Seca (Spain), March 30thThe photo finish decided the winner of stage 6 of Volta Ciclista a Catalunya: Team BAHRAIN MERIDA sprinter Phil Bauhaus takes second place, behind Michael Matthews.

“In the end it was all about legs and he was few cms stronger than me or he did a better stroke of the bike” the German rider says describing the sprint “In the final Caruso helped me and I was really well positioned. With 300m to go I found myself on the wheel of Matthews and I think today I started the sprint in the right moment. For sure you can be disappointed if you lose so close. I’m sure in the future we can make one place better”.

It was a very close finish in Vila-Seca, where a bunch sprint took place as expected, after the day’s breakaway was caught with about ten km to go, thanks to the great team work of Team Bahrain Merida boys.

“We controlled the race from the beginning until the end, almost without any support, just Dimension Data helped us” Bauhaus explains “We were the strongest team today. Everybody in the team gave 100%. I’m really proud of the team. I think everybody did what they have to do. Today was again excellent team work”.

Team Sports Director Vladimir Miholjević agrees with Phil’s comments “We are very happy with team work and with result, but also a little bit disappointed because we were very close to victory.
We decided already yesterday that we needed to control the race for Phil or another option was to be in the breakaway with Bole inside. Our boys – Andrea Garosio, Antonio Nibali and Valerio Agnoli – together with Dimension Data and in the end with Sunweb brought the breakaway back and we decided tactically to put Phil on Matthews’ wheel. He tried to beat him. He was very close. He lost on photo finish. It’s just a matter of moments when he’s gonna win”.
