Visconti excellent 5th in Piazza del Campo

“I had been thinking about  Strade Bianche for a long time – said Giovanni Visconti, 5th over the finish line in Siena – and this morning I started with the best I had. It was a special day for me. Near Montalcino I even thought about pulling out because it was too cold, but then I regained my confidence and continued with determination.«

“My only regret is when the winner, Belgian Tiesj Benoot, attacked and I did not follow him right away. I thought someone else would close the gap and so I lost the moment. But this does not change anything – being in the Top Five is undoubtedly a significant result.«

The young Mark Padun was among the leaders of the race, escaping after a few kilometers: “I was ordered to join the first breakaway – said the Ukrainian rider – to take some pressure from the team. In some parts, it felt more like a cyclocross race but in the end it was a good experience.”

Sports director Alberto Volpi is also satisfied: “It was a tough day, controlled by the weather conditions, as expected. Giovanni did a great race, showing excellent strength but also Matej Mohoric (11th place) showed great shape.«

Tomorrow the Team will be at the GP Larciano’s start with Matej and Giovanni among the possible protagonists of this historic Tuscan race. “I will ride around my home – said the Italian rider – and so I have to think about recovering as fast as possible. Competition is very strong but I’m really in a good mood and I will give everything I have.«
