Tour of Slovenia

June 19th – 23rd

SUNDAY, 23 JUN 2019

Trebnje-Novo Mesto, 167.5km. Hilly, final flat circuit.

A reduced group sprint was expected on the final day and Team Bahrain Merida’s plan was to have some of the fast guys included to contest it.
“We would wish that our sprinters could fight for the win on this last stage, but unfortunately Grega Bole had cramps at the end” Team Sports Director Gorazd Stangelj comments “Actually there was a big selection on the last climb, due to Gazprom that did it really fast. A group of about 25 riders formed and Grega showed that he was able to follow so far, but today he couldn’t. Phil Bauhaus dropped too. We tried to come back, but the gap was steadily one minute and in the front they also went full gas”.
Best-placed rider in Novo Mesto was Domen Novak, who was in the breakaway and then try to resist on the final flat circuit, finishing 12” behind the winner Nizzolo, while Ulissi confirmed the leadership of the overall standing.
“All in all, one second place in this Tour is not bad for us” Stangelj adds “We can be happy because Novak is going better day by day. Arashiro is also back from an injury and he’s also improving day by day. Bauhaus is still on the way to grow up. In general, I believe this is the start of a second part of the season and we’re on a good way”.
