Tour of Oman: Gorka Izagirre on the podium
Muscat, February 18th, 2018 – “When Nathan Haas tried to attack on the last short ascent with 3 km to go – said Gorka Izagirre, third on the podium of the Tour of Oman 2018 – I went behind him. I wanted to avoid surprises and maybe lose my position in the overall”.
“The stage went the way we wanted – the Basque rider continues – and I have to thank my teammates for their help. It was important that my direct opponents did not gain seconds at the Bonus Sprints and so it went”.
“After the 7th place at the Tour Down Under in January, this podium means I’m working in the right direction. Next appointment will be the Paris-Nice together with my brother Ion “.
As for tradition, the final stage of the Tour was short at just 135km, with an expected final chance for the sprinters. So it was and the Norwegian Alexander Kristoff won on the Muscat’s Corniche. The Kazakh Alexey Lutsenko won the General Classification.
For the sport director Gorazd Štangelj the Tour of Oman ends positively. “After the podium at the Dubai Tour here too we managed to reach a good final result as well as having obtained many placings in the Top Ten stage”.
“The race proved to be very competitive and with many good opponents. The team worked well and the podium of Gorka shows that we made the right choice in betting on him as for Vincenzo Nibali, who gave good signals here in Oman “.
Next Team race will be the Abu Dhabi Tour starting next Wednesday.
