Tour of Guangxi

October 17th – 22nd

Nanning, 143km Sprint stage

Nanning, the capital of Guangxi hosts stage 3 with 5-lap circuit of 143km in total. A trio were in the morning break, but the red jersey squad fully took control of the day, with Mitchelton Scott and Astana joined force of the chase, the leaders gradually lost ground and reeled. Team Bahrain Merida stayed in the front in the second half of the race.

It turned out that the climb did not split the bunch. Mass sprint was intense as always. Our German sprinter Phil Bauhaus took 13th in the bunch sprint. Pascal Ackermann(Bora-Hansgrohe) took the victory of the stage and extended another day in general classification.

From Rik Verbrugghe, our sport director: “Today’s plan was to try to do the sprint with Phil, and protect our GC riders. Phil managed to be in the first group, but he was alone. It would be difficult to find the position for the sprint. But he was there, so that is a good sign.”

“Garosio just missed the first group because the end of the downhill he took a gap and never came back. We do not have anybody anymore to try for GC tomorrow. The good thing is that Phil stayed in first group and team worked well to bring him there before the last climb.”
