Qinzhou, 152.3km Sprint stage

Along the Beibu Gulf, riders were heading west north to Qinzhou. A breakaway of 3 was off the front for most of the day until the finishing circuit. With the teams with stage victory in mind kept them in check for the rest of the stage, the trio finally fell apart and faltered. At the end of the stage, it was Daniel McLay(EF Education First) proved to be the fastest. Phil Bauhaus launched the sprint and took a great Top 10,  but then relegated as his punishment for his veering to the left in the final.

From our sports director Rik Verbrugghe: “Team Bahrain Merida rode well the whole day. We decided also not to pull today to save the energy for the final to stay all together. We knew that it would be a headwind sprint on a really big road. The plan went pretty good, I think the Top 10 were in one line. Phil started a little bit too early, he blowed up in the last meters and finished 7th. But he did not really hold his line in the sprint, so jury disqualified him. It was a difficult and chaotic sprint. I think this disqualification was correct from the jury.”
