Tour de Suisse – Stage 9 Schaffhausen-Schaffhausen ITT 28.6 km

Schaffhausen, June 18th – Ion Izagirre takes 4th in the closing time-trial of the Tour de Suisse. The Spanish Champion moves to 6th in the GC. Good performance of BAHRAIN MERIDA Team in the 9 days race.

The Tour de Suisse ends today with a Time-Trial around Schaffausen, from the old town to the LIPO Park. A 28.6 km course with the first part up and down and a 4 km climb at 5% in the finale, before a fast downhill towards the finish. Team BAHRAIN MERIDA leader Ion Izagirre started as one of the favourite, seen that time-trial is his specialty and also because he won the final TT here last year. The performance of the Spanish Champion was indeed good, but not enough to take one of the three best time. He finished 4th, 51” down the winner Rohan Dennis (36’30”). Thanks to this result he moved from 8th to 6th in the General Classification (+3’51” down the leader Spilak).

Despite he was looking for a stage win, Ion Izagirre is satisfied of his Tour de Suisse: “Today I can’t win, but I feel good and now I’m looking ahead for the Tour de France. Before I have the Spanish Championships too and I think I can do well there. I’m very motivated to try to get good results. Here at the Tour de Suisse I finished in the top ten with good feelings”.

Sports Director Harald Morscher is satisfied as well: “We did a very good job this week and also we took some good results, with Ion and Bonifazio in the sprints. Today it was bad that we lost the podium for 4 seconds, because Ion did a really good time trial and he risked a lot in the downhill. We were very surprised that he went so fast and we’re vey happy about this. He had a bad day some days ago, so he can’t fight for the overall win, but I think we have to be happy about our Tour de Suisse”.
