Tignes, July, 26th – Stage 19 was canceled on the descent of the Col de l’lseran due to the extreme weather forces and also the landslide blocking the road between Val d’Isère and Tignes.

Until then, Vincenzo Nibali and Damiano Caruso had been protagonists of a long break together with 25 other riders. “It was the right decision – explains Vincenzo – there were no conditions to continue and the safety of us riders comes first. Today I felt much better and I wanted to try it from the first kilometers of the race. When the GC contenders took us, I stayed with them except for Egan Bernal, then they told us downhill that the race had been neutralized “.

“Safety first – comments SD Gorazd Stangelj – and it was the right decision to take. From a sporting point of view, for us it’s a pity because we were having a good race: Vincenzo was with the best and also Damiano had gained other points for the best climber classification “.

“Right from the start – says Damiano Caruso – we were pushing very hard and Vincenzo was very good at getting into the break with other three riders. The first ascent made a great selection and with other we returned to the first. I realized that there were no other contenders for the “polka dot” jersey – Romain Bardet and Tim Wellens – and I thought I could conquer it on the Col d ‘Iseran, the only HC of the day “.

“Unfortunately, in our group there were also Alejandro Valverde and Rigoberto Uran and therefore the main peloton did not give us too much space and then recovered. Tomorrow there is another mountain stage and I will give everything to find the best possible result “.
