The Izagirre brothers in the Top Ten with two stages left

  |   Press

Lodosa, 5th April 2018 – Gorka goes down to 5th place in the overall standings, but his brother Ion enters the Top Ten. This is Lodosa’s ITT verdict after the victory of Slovenian Primoz Roglic, now more and more leader of the Basque race.

“I had a strong start – explains Gorka Izagirre – so much so that I had the some intermediate time as Ion but then going to the finish line I could not keep the same pace. Apart Roglic, we are all very close in the ranking and the fight for the podium is still very open”.

Satisfied his brother Ion: “I’m happy with my race, I recovered several positions in the standings and, as I hoped, I entered the Top Ten. I struggled in the first part because I had the wind in the face then I went much better. Only two stages are missing and I am convinced that those who lost seconds will try to make a tough race starting from tomorrow morning“.

Closes the sport director Gorazd Štangelj:”Gorka has lost two positions, but Ion has entered the Top Ten. We’ll see what athletes like for example Quintana and Landa will invented after have lost few seconds today. I think that strong climbers like the Izagirre brothers can take advantage from the situation. I don’t think that the podium is impossible and it could be that someone already tomorrow will pay something after the today’s big effort”.

Fifth stage offers, in fact, different opportunities for the bravest. From Vitoria-Gasteiz to Eibar (164km) with two 2nd category ascents and one 1st climb category, the Azurki Gaina, with only 20km to go. The final is a light but constant going up.
