Fontenay Le Comte, July 7th, ST1 – A stage with a very a nervous and exciting finale opened the 2018 Tour de France. Easy to predict a final sprint and so it was. The young Colombian Fernando Gaviria won the bunch sprint and he’s the first yellow jersey of the Grand Boucle.

Good 11th place for Vincenzo Nibali, while some pretenders to the final victory – for example Chris Froome, Richie Porte and Nairo Quintana – have lost about a minute due to multiple crashes and mechanical incidents .

“It was the classic Tour opening stage – the Italian champion commented – with a long breakaway started soon and caught with only 10km to go.  Then another stage started with the sprinter fighting  to find the best position. I struggled to stay in the front  especially to avoid more risks “.

In the first group, also Sonny Colbrelli and Kristijan Koren. “It was important to finish ahead – explains Head of Performance Paolo Slongo – because the team classification defines the starting order of the TTT, scheduled next Monday. At the moment, we are fourth and this guarantees us to start among the last teams knowing already the result of the others”.

The second stage will bring the peloton to La Roche-Sur-Yon after 185km. The route does not present particular difficulties with a finish suitable for sprinters. “The finish line is slightly uphill – says Sonny – and compared to today’s, it fits more with my characteristics. Today it was important to get ahead, tomorrow I would like to be there for the victory “.
