Arlanc, France, 5th June – 171 km long 2nd stage of Critérium du Dauphiné was an ideal stage for Sonny Colbrelli, who took 4th place and also won the green jersey. It was an overall good performance of the BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team.

Second stage of Critérium du Dauphiné started today in a warm sunny weather with 8 km/h NW wind in Saint Chamond. The stage had four categorized climbs, Verrirés-en-Forez (Cat. 2) being the hardest one. It was a stage in which a battle of sprinters was expected.

BAHRAIN MERIDA Team’s main strategy today was to bring Sonny Colbrelli in the best possible place for his “fireworks”. Yukiya Arashiro, Borut Božič and Grega Bole were pushing hard all the way to the last kilometres and it was a real battle between Katyusha-Alpecin, Cofidis Solutions, FDJ and BAHRAIN MERIDA riders to bring their sprinters in the best possible position and build hard blocks for them at the same time. It looked like Alexander Kristoff will be the first one to pass the finish line, but Arnaud Demare sprinted in style today and took the victory.

Sonny Colbrelli took the fourth place in a long uphill sprint and showed all his capacities of a great sprinter. Sonny tried to pop out 500 m before the finish, but unfortunately the other teams kept an eye on him and blocked him quite well. Despite that it was another great result for Sonny Colbrelli, confirmed also with the green jersey.

“I lost some positions in the sprint because I touched with another rider,” commented Sonny Colbrelli after the podium ceremony. “I took a good 4th place anyway, but Demare was the strongest today and he took a clear victory. Tomorrow there will be another chance. I hope I will wear this green jersey right to the last stage.”

Yukiya Arashiro was strong today and he commented after the race:” At the beginning I didn’t feel good but after talking to Sports director I pushed more and reached front group in peloton and I did a good job. I am very satisfied with today’s race.”
