Niccolò Bonifazio third once more. Pozzovivo safely in the bunch.
Iseo, May 23rd– Stage 17; Riva del Garda – Iseo – 155km
Niccolò Bonifazio sprints to third place for the third time at this year’s Giro d’Italia.
It happens on the Franciacorta stage, 155km from Riva del Garda to Iseo. An undulating stage profile with total elevation of 1,300m and a final very demanding 23.9km circuit. Win from the break or sprint victory that was today’s possible scenario and Team BAHRAIN MERIDA was ready for both. But there were any chances for the break of the day, in which entered Giovanni Visconti.
It was up to the sprinters to claim the stage win in Iseo. Elia Viviani took it, beating Bennet (second) and Bonifazio (third): “I’m happy with this result. It was a hard day. There wasn’t any moment to retrieve since the start. Thanks to Mohoric for leading me up to 300 meters to go and have the chance to contest the sprint”.
It could be a tricky stage for the GC fighters also because of the heavy rain in the final kilometer. Happily Team BAHRAIN MERIDA leader Domenico Pozzovivo finished safely in the Maglia Rosa group: “As planned we were in the break with Visconti and then contesting the sprint with Bonifazio. The road was slippery due to the rain in the final, so the aim was to finish it safely. I was in a good position with the help of my teammates. Now three crucial stages are awaiting us”
