Volta Ciclista A Catalunya – Stage 1

Calella, 19th March, 2018.

The 98th edition of the Volta Ciclista A Catalunya started and finished today in Calella, with a victory of Alvaro Hodeg (Quick-Step Floors). The Columbian sprinted to the victory of the opening stage with the help, strong presence and support of his teammates in the last phase of the stage. The runner-up was Sam Bennett and 3rd place was grabbed by Jay McCarthy, his Bora Hansgrohe fellow.

The TBM strategy for the opening stage, prepared by our sports directors Morscher and Miholjević, was to do everything possible to keep the high position of the team and to try to get Niccoló Bonifazio in the best position for the sprint.

Harald MorscherTBM Sports Director, said after the stage: “As expected, the team was working good. I saw a good teamwork today and all our riders did a good job. I may be a bit sorry that Niccoló Bonifazio didn’t react a little earlier for the sprint, but he will hopefully show his quality at the 6th stage which may again be suitable for him. After his great Milano-Sanremo performance, Matej Mohorič again proved how great and strong rider he is. There were some crashes at the early phase of the stage and I am very happy that we were not involved in them. Giovanni Visconti, our GC, and all our riders are motivated to perform well and wait for their chances at Catalunya.”
