Peñiscola, Wednesday, 31st January 2018 – 69th edition of Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana started in Oropesa del Mar. Todays’ first stage was 191,5 km long and mostly flat, with one 2nd cat. climb, La Bandereta, at the 86th km.

Since the line-up of BAHRAIN MERIDA Team for Vuelta Valenciana does not have a real sprinter, Ramunas Navardauskas was chosen at the team meeting before the race to try to get into the best possible position in the last few kilometers of the stage and later to the front for the sprint. The whole team was working well together and in the end Ramunas caught the top 15.

Danny van Poppel (Lotto NL-Jumbo) won today’s opener in Peñiscola, Luka Mezgec (Mitchelton-Scott) was the runner-up and Jurgen Roelandts (BMC Racing) finished third.

Ramunas Navardauskas said after the race: »It was quite a good race but also quite stressful in the last kilometers. I even felt some shoulder to shoulder and also bike to bike fights. All in all, I am satisfied. Let’s see what tomorrow brings. I’m sure that we will get better each day.«

Hermann Pernsteiner added: »In the morning I was a bit nervous, but now, in the end, I am very happy with my racing debut for BAHRAIN MERIDA Team and being here with my great team-mates. It was a bit tricky on some parts of today’s stage, but I’m sure we are going to be better in the following stages.«
