Volta Ciclista a Catalunya – Stage 2

Mataró – Valls 175.6km

Valls, 20th March 2018.

The second stage of the Volta Ciclista a Catalunya started today in Mataró in a bit chilly weather conditions for this time of the year in Catalunya, with some cross and tail wind but with dry roads. Todays’ stage was not the most sterling one but the riders were having relatively »good legs«. Team Movistar was mostly dictating the rhythm in the peloton.

After a relatively calm race, just before the peak of the last climb Col de Lilla, 10 km before the finish, the race intensified on the fast descent, where riders achieved the speed of 75km/h. Teams Movistar, Michelton Scott and TBM fought through the roundabouts and hard corners, pushing till the end.

Matej Mohorič and Enrico Gasparotto had a chance in the sprint. They both held a great position after two tough right corners on which Enrico had to slightly reduce the speed and therefore lost the momentum a little and also Matej Mohorič couldn’t explode on time. It seemed they started a little too early for the fireworks, but the last corner was very demanding one. In the end, Matej Mohorič took an excellent 5th and Enrico Gasparotto 6th position. After the 2nd stage of Volta a Catalunya, Matej Mohorič is 5th in the GC and Enrico Gasparotto 8th. Matej Mohorič also took over the best young riders jersey from Niccolo Bonifazio.

Again today the extraordinary and eternal Spanish flower, Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), proved that he has also sprinting skills for such races. In any case, he took bonification points at the intermediate sprint, he even took the sprint, the stage, the victory and overall lead in the general classification. And he did all that even before the mountain stages…
