DOLE – STATION DES RUSSES 187,5 km / Stage 8

Station Des Rousses, France, July 8th

Today it was a stage with even higher temperatures. At the start, it was 30,5°C and an hour later already 35°C. The start of the stage was nervous, with many riders trying to escape.

The whole stage was a tough one with 3 passes to cross, before the arrival to the resort of Station des Rousses. It was a stage with a breakaway soon after the start, which made 46 riders actively keep their eyes on the breakaway, including Grega Bole, Janez Brajkovič and Ondrej Cink from BAHRAIN MERIDA Team. At the intermediate sprint at Donlieu (84 km), Sonny Colbrelli showed good performance and took 4th place (13 pts).

23km before the finish, riders passed the final climb and after 11.7 km they raced over the plateau to reach the finish line. From the group of 46 riders, that were chasing the breakaway, the one that survived and found the most energy was Lilian Calmejane (Direct Energie). He performed his solo after 25 km after Monteé de la Combe de Laisia Les Molunes (Cat. 1) and claimed his first Tour de France victory.
