La Vuelta – Stage 19

La Vuelta a España

August 24th – September 15th

FRIDAY, 13 SEP 2019

Ávila > Toledo, 165.2km. Undulating.

A stage that on the paper should not be too difficult, it wasn’t an easy day at all at La Vuelta a España. Happily, our riders came safely to the finish, with Dylan Teuns in 7th place, with the main group, 8” behind the solo winner Cavagna (DQS). The French rider was part of the day’s breakaway; an 11-men group in which Team Bahrain Merida was represented by Domen Novak, then dropped and caught with 53km to go.
It’s Heinrich Haussler, who describes well how the day was: “Hard day…I need a different word than a hard day, but this word doesn’t exist. Super hard day. Right from km 0, just like always in this whole Vuelta, has been complete stress. Wind, echelons, crashes…absolutely full gas. Two more days to go and then we can enjoy the rest”.
In fact, the stage featured an uphill start, as well as a cobbled and slightly uphill way to the finish, where a sprint could be expected. But in between the riders had to face heavy rain and crosswinds. Bad weather conditions that caused also a big crash in which the red and white jerseys were involved too. Both Roglic and Lopez could get back and nothing changes in the overall. And tomorrow is another hard one.
“Tomorrow is another day. We will try to go in the breakaway again and try to finish in the top ten, maybe if possible also to go for the stage win. Our guys are doing the maximum here at the Vuelta. I think the most important thing is to keep mentally strong because after three-week racing everybody is tired” Team Bahrain Merida Sports Director Rik Verbrugghe concluded.
