La Vuelta a España

August 24th – September 15th

Pravia > Alto de La Cubilla. Lena, 144,4km. Mountain.

The penultimate mountains stage of La Vuelta a España featured a gruelling course, with four cat. 1 climbs as the passes of Navacerrada, La Morcuera tackled on both sides, and Cotos.
Team Bahrain Merida plans for today were to try to attack with Hermann Pernsteiner, that showed a pretty good shape when it comes to hard ascents. And that was what exactly the Austrian rider tried to do since the beginning of the race, as he explained exhausted, but satisfied with his 11th place (3’47” behind the solo winner Higuita) on such a tough day:
“What a day! It was full gas all day. I tried so many times to go in the breakaway, but they caught me. Then at the last attempt, before the second climb, I attacked and I did a really hard effort to catch the men in front. I made it, but then Astana pushed really hard and I was a little bit empty. I couldn’t follow the pace. I tried everything I had today, and I think I can be proud of my performance”.
Pernsteiner moved up to 15th place overall, while Teuns dropped three positions and now he is 13th.
