La Vuelta a España

August 24th – September 15th

MONDAY, 9 SEP 2019

Pravia > Alto de La Cubilla. Lena, 144,4km. Mountain.

It was another tough day in the Asturian mountains at La Vuelta a España and Team Bahrain Merida riders tried again to face it at the front and to stay with the best riders.
As on yesterday’s stage, Mark Padun was part of the breakaway, opening a gap with others three men after 12km. Other riders joined them and then the Ukrainian attacked again from the break with some companions, but due to yesterday’s effort he was then dropped and even though it seemed he succeeded to get back, then he had to surrender definitely.
Meanwhile, Hermann Pernsteiner was strong enough to stay with the group of the GC contenders until the acceleration of Lopez, that opened a gap. Only Pogacar could manage to stay with him, followed later by the overall leader Roglic. Instead, our Austrian rider remained with the World Champion Valverde and finished 20th – 6’24” behind the winner Jakob Fuglsang (AST):
“It was a hard stage like we expected. It was full gas all day and on the last climb too. I felt good and I could follow the attacks and I also tried once, but then they caught me. In the finale, it was really hard to stay in the wheels and I could stay only with Valverde. I think I can be more than happy with my performance today. If only I think that a few years ago, I watched such champions on TV and now I ride with them on the biggest climbs, it’s like a dream. I hope that I can continue like that in the next days”.
Thanks to his solid performance Hermann Pernsteiner could defend his tenth place overall before the second rest day of La Vuelta.
