La Vuelta a España

August 24th – September 15th

San Vicente de la Barquera > Oviedo, 188km. Flat

Chaotic finish at the Vuelta a España today. A massive crash with 1km to go involved dozens of riders, including Dylan Teuns, who hit the deck. Happily, he suffered only some abrasions. Despite of this huge crash a couple of the few fast men remained in the peloton manage to go for the win, with Sam Bennet taking it ahead of Max Richeze.
On the paper a bunch sprint was expected in Oviedo, even if the route was not completely flat and after two tough weeks of race, nothing can be taken for granted. Therefore, also a breakaway could have some small chances today and Team Bahrain Merida planned to try to join it.
In fact, a 6-man group went right after the gun and Luka Pibernik was among them.
“In the start we decided that we had to try, you never know…” the Slovenian rider explained “We know that it was one of the last chances for the sprinters, but actually it was quite a hard start, with some climbs and so we decided to try and in the end we arrived quite close. I pushed hard as much as possible, but they caught us with about 4 km to go. Anyway, I’m happy with my performance”.
Still two hard stages await the peloton, before the second rest day of La Vuelta.
