La Vuelta a España

August 24th – September 15th

FRIDAY, 6 SEP 2019

Bilbao > Los Machucos, 166.4km. Mountain

A gruelling day in the saddle at La Vuelta a España. The peloton had to face seven categorised climbs, including the HC brutal ascent to the finish. Team Bahrain Merida boys tried to show their colours on this hard day.
Domen Novak managed to enter in the day’s breakaway that went after about 40km: “I could join the break and then we went full gas to the finish. Today’s stage was very hard” the Slovenian rider commented after the finish, that saw the triumph of his fellow-countryman Tadej Pogacar just ahead Primoz Roglič, who increased his GC lead.
In fact, the race was decided on the steep final 7km climb. A tough course that suited the Austrian climber Hermann Pernsteiner, TBM best-placed rider atop Las Machucos, finishing 12th (+1’13”):
“It was a brutally hard day. A big breakaway went so the tempo was high all day. Then Astana took control of the race to close the gap and it was really hard until the last climb. I did my best and I think I did a good performance. I kept my rhythm and could catch some guys on the final ascents.
We still have lots of stages ahead and some of them will be hard as well. Now a good recover, tomorrow’s stage should be easy and then let’s see on Sunday and Monday when we will face two mountain stages”.
