La Vuelta a España

August 24th – September 15th

SUNDAY, 1 SEP 2019

Andorra La Vella > Cortal d’Encamps, 94.4km. Mountains

Epic day at La Vuelta a España. Today’s stage was a brutal one on the paper, with almost zero km of flat, hard climbs and gravel sector too. Moreover, a thunderstorm on the final made it even harder.
Team Bahrain Merida hero of the day was Hermann Pernsteiner, who was at the front and finished in 6th place with the best riders.
“I had fantastic legs today and everything went as we planned with the Sports Directors. I could manage to go in the breakaway and stay in front as long as possible” the Austrian rider commented after his massive effort, that saw him also second atop the first especial ascent of the race, Coll de la Gallina (at km 56.6).
“It was really an epic stage with hail on the gravel roads, that reminded me on my mountain bike past. In the end, I had really good legs. I only missed when Valverde and Roglic attacked, I had to be a little bit stronger, but I have to be happy with what I did today. It was one of my best days since I’m a road cyclist, so a great day!”.
Hermann Pernsteiner was 6th, crossing the finish line 59” behind Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) who soloes to victory. Nairo Quintana (Movistar) took second place and he is the new overall leader.
Unfortunately, Phil Bauhaus couldn’t finish the stage and then he won’t start after tomorrow’s rest day.
