La Vuelta a España

August 24th – September 15th

TUESDAY, 27 AUG 2019

Cullera > El Puig, 175.5km. Sprint finish

It was another day for the sprinters at the Vuelta a España. Two riders attacked from the gun, but the peloton controlled the breakaway and with 18km to go they were all together. The day’s sole classified climb – the Puerto del Oronet – came 46km from the finish, causing some split in the peloton, but when also a late attack in the final was caught, there was the expected outcome: a bunch sprint finish. Unfortunately Team Bahrain Merida fast man Phil Bauhaus lost some acceleration in the final km and couldn’t properly contest today’s sprint, finishing 14th in El Puig. It was a tight one, with Jakobsen beating Bennet in photo finish.
Tomorrow the peloton will face the first hard stage of this edition of La Vuelta and Mark Padun is already focussed on it: “I had a minor crash, as the road became narrow and riders suddenly stopped. I had several scratches on my knee but nothing serious. Tomorrow we will have the first mountain test and we will have some answers”.
