Day 2 of the Vuelta a España was a very hot and demanding one. Almost 200km on an undulating course, with two early climbs and a final one in the last 25km, where the stage was decided.
After the day’s break was resumed, in fact, the peloton split on the Alto de Puig Llorença. Among the attackers, Nairo Quintana, who took the solo win in Calpe. His advantage was not enough to take also the overall. The Vuelta has a new red jersey anyway: Nicolas Roche.
Team Bahrain Merida boys did their best to stay with the main group and in the end, Teuns, Padun and Pernsteiner could finish 1’43” behind the winner.
The heat was the main topic of the day. “So hot today” Dylan Teuns says “It was a very tough stage, also because of the heat”. “It was like sauna” Mark Padun explains “A long hot day. They were strong, but they could also resist better to hot temperatures”. “It’s the Vuelta” Hermann Pernsteiner comments while cooling down after the finish “The recovery after the stage is really important. Here we have good support and we will be fresh tomorrow again”.
