Izagirre on the podium of Spanish National Championships
Soria, June 25th – Team BAHRAIN MERIDA rider Ion Izagirre took the bronze medal in Spanish National Road Race Championships (Garray-Soria 207,3 km). Good performance of Ivan Cortina, who was in the early breakaway.
Four of our riders (Cortina, Insausti, Moreno and Izagirre) lined up in Spain today to compete for the elite men’s road race national title. After 7 km Ivan Garcia Cortina went in a breakaway of 22 men. He attacked on the climb and he was solo for a while, then he was joined by a group of 11 chasers, that were caught by the peloton with 40 km to go. Then in the final five men were fighting for the National title: Ezquerra, Mas, Herrada, Valverde and Izagirre. With 2 km to go they had 15 seconds over the first group of chasers.
“The rivals could play a super team work, seen their numerical superiority, but they didn’t let us be surprised” commented Sports Directors Mario Chiesa “They controlled Izagirre and he was clever in the closing km, taking a very good third place behind Valverde and the new Spanish Champion Herrada”.
Speaking after the finish, bronze medallist Izagirre said: “I’m happy with this result. It’s always nice to be on the podium of the National Championships. I did my best. It was not easy to compete against teams with so many riders such as Movistar and Caja Rural in the final and almost impossible to take a better place on the podium. I’m confident ahead of the Tour de France”.
