Itzulia Basque Country

April 8th – 13th

Eibar-Eibar 118.2km. Mountain with 6 categorised climbs.

The Tour of the Basque Country concluded today with a short, but very tough stage with six classified climbs, including a very steep cat.1 ascent.
It was exactly there that a five-man group attacked and that was the decisive move of the day both to decide the stage and overall win, respectively taken by Adam Yates and Ion Izagirre.
“We actually expected more, but unfortunately the last two stages were too hard for us to follow the best” Bahrain Merida Head Sports Director Gorazd Stangelj explains “As everybody knows Basque Country is one of the hardest stage in this period, I mean there are no flat stages.
We were a little bit unlucky from the beginning with three crashes of Dylan Teuns.
Maybe we could do better in some stages. We did our best, we tried full gas, but that’s it, we didn’t succeed”.
Bahrain Merida finished down to three riders (Dylan Teuns, Grega Bole and Luka Pibernik) “We could expect the abandon of our young Stevie Williams, but he came back to racing in one of the toughest races in the calendar. He spent a day in a breakaway and we must be happy that he hasn’t his physical problem any more. This is a good signal”.
