Itzulia Basque Country

April 8th – 13th

Sarriguren-Estibaliz 191.4km. Undulating with two cat.3 climbs and a punchy uphill final.

Stage 3 was another hilly day with a final that suited puncheurs and was perfect for Dylan Teuns, but unfortunately the Belgian rider couldn’t be there to try to take it, because he lost time due to a big crash with 6km to go.
“Happily, I did not crash today” he said explaining that he had just to stop to avoid worse consequences. “I was behind and I had to be sure not to be involved. I went besides the road and I lost some time. But I saved also some time and it could be good”. In fact, Teuns managed to keep the 8th place overall, +1’11” down on the overall leader Schachmann, who won also today’s stage.
With Teuns out of the game by then, it was up to Grega Bole to contest the final uphill sprint and he did very well taking 10th place: “I was behind, but then the first riders slowed down and I follow a Movistar rider. I was in the front and we opened the sprint. Then two riders little closed me and I lost some positions there. Too bad that we lost Dylan due to the big crash, because it could be really good for him today”.
Rohan Dennis was a non-starter for stage 3. He was at the Basque Country to see at what point his condition was and after careful consideration with the performance staff and medical staff it was decided that it would be the best interest if he takes some recovery time and prepares for the next part of his season which starts once again in May.
