Arrate, 7th April 2018  Ion Izagirre concludes the 2018 edition of the Itzulia Basque Country with the third place in the overall standings. Under a heavy rain, he finished third in the “queen stage” behind the winner Spaniard Enric Mas and Mikel Landa. The Slovenian Primoz Roglic maintained his leadership in the GC.

“I wanted to win the stage – says a smiling Ion – but I return home with this third place that for me is like a victory. After the 50 seconds that I lost in the first stage, in fact, I would have never thought to get so high in the overall”.

“Last Sunday, I suffered the first heat – continues the Basque rider – but then, stage by stage, I was always better and even today’s third place is a further confirmation”.

“After the fourth place at Paris-Nice – he concludes – this is my first podium of the season. Next week I will fly to Belgium for the Ardenne’s classics and after the Liege I will at the Tour de Romandie’s start, where I will aim for the general classification “.

Sport director Gorazd Štangelj analyzes the team’s performance at the end of one of the toughest stage races on the international calendar: “The goal was the podium and we achieved it. Ion and Gorka have been very good and always have a good performance”.

“The two young riders ran very well: Mark Padun was a pleasant surprise and even Hermann Pernsteiner proved to be strong uphill. Finally, both Franco Pellizotti, Yunika Arashiro and first also Vincenzo have given their contribution of experience”.
