Les Praeres, September 8th 2018 – Ion closes 9th the second of the three stages dedicated to climbers. The Basque rider finished with a 37“ gap from the stage winner and new race leader to the British Simon Yates.

“Even today I gave 100% – says Ion, seventh in the GC with a 1’40” gap – and I have no regrets for the lost time. I had to defend myself on the last climb because it was too explosive, but in the end I did not lose much and I’m waiting tomorrow for another hard stage “.

“I want to thank Vincenzo, Hermann and my brother Gorka for the great job they have done in the final and that allowed me to take Les Praeres in a good position”.

Vincenzo Nibali: “I made the pace in front of the peloton to help our leader Ion to take in the best place possible the last climb and also to defend our first place in the team classification. I have long been in the group and the feelings improve step by step. I’m coming back on good levels “.

In the home stage, also Ivan Garcia Cortina wanted to leave a mark going on the break, together with 5 other, riders in the first part of the stage: “I wanted to do well in front of my fans and the people who love me. I knew that the last climb was not for me but I wanted to try the same to make a good race”.

Tomorrow another classic arrival of the Spanish stage race. The peloton will reach the 1,110 meters of the Lagos de Covadonga after having passed, along the 178km of the 15h stage, two other first category climbs. The last one leading to the finish line is almost 12km long with a maximum gradient of 20%!. Strong emotions await us.
