Gorka Izagirre moved up in the GC and now is third
Bermeo, 3rd April 2018 – Third today at the end of the stage and third also in the General Classification. Definitely a good day for Gorka Izagirre who missed the win but gained two positions in the GC and now he has a 39” gap from the race leader Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe.
“I’m happy with the result – explains the Basque rider – and also for my place in the ranking after the first two stages. On the last climb, when I saw Alaphilippe, Landa and Roglic attacking I decided to follow them. Then together with Mikel we tried to gain as many seconds as possible. Finally, I thought about winning the stage but Alaphilippe was faster “.
“Tomorrow, I expect a more quiet stage for the Overall leader – added Gorka – before the ITT on Thursday and the last two stages with so many climbs. I like the time trial route and I think I can do a good race “.
The 21 year old Mark Padun, in his first season as a pro rider, won the best climber jersey after going on the run for over 90 km: “From our car told me to try to go inside the break – tells the young Ukrainian – and after a few attempts we found ourselves in eleven riders. I didn’t think I had taken the jersey and when I was told to go to the podium, at the beginning, I did not even understand why!”.
The comment of Sport director Gorazd Štangelj: “Padun was good at getting into the breakaway and I’m satisfied that a young rider like him has been highlighted. Also happy for Gorka who also confirmed today that he has a good condition”.
The third stage seems to be less demanding than the first two. From Bermeo to Valdegovia (185km) on a route with only a second category climb – La Barrerilla, 7.6km, 5% – but located just over 90km from the finish line.
