Giro d’Italia

May 11th – June 2nd

FRIDAY, 24 MAY 2019

Pinerolo>Ceresole Reale (Lake Serrù), 196km. High Mountain.

While Zakarin was going to take a solo win on the first summit finish of this edition of the Giro d’Italia, behind him the duel between two big overall contenders got all the attention. Team Bahrain Merida captain Vincenzo Nibali and Primoz Roglic fought attacking each other on the final hard climb atop Ceresole Reale (above 2000m), but they finished together: the Slovenian in 7th place and the Shark in 8th place, with a gap of 2’57” to the winner, that moved up to third overall, with Nibali still in 5th place.
“It was a very tough day. I’m ok with my performance and result, seen that it wasn’t a simple stage for sure” Nibali comments “We showed that our team is there to fight. We did an amazing work with the team today and Pozzovivo was impressive”.
In fact, the first high mountain test saw a good teamwork of Bahrain Merida boys. Domenico Pozzovivo and Antonio Nibali were in the break of the day. Then Antonio dropped, while Domenico waited his captain to help him: “It was a demanding day and I gave everything. In the breakaway the pace was high and then I focused on the task of supporting Vincenzo”.
“We raced well today” SD Paolo Slongo confirms “With Pozzovivo and Antonio Nibali in the early breakaway. Then Pozzo gave a crucial help when he stopped and together with Caruso they helped Vincenzo in the finale”.
