First race day at the Hammer Sportzone Limburg

Friday, 2nd June 2017 – Today’s Hammer Climb started at 3 pm and was held on a 7 km circuit with challenging gradients and 2 climbs, in Vaals, about 30km from Limburg. With 11 laps the riders had 11 chances to score points – the first 10 riders that crossed the finish line in each lap, scored team points. On 3rd, 7th and 11th lap the fastest riders got double points.

The attacking began already at the neutral zone and the peloton immediately began to line out and later split apart. The five riders from BAHRAIN MERIDA didn’t catch today’s fastest group but the team is expecting better results in the next two days.

Sports director, Vladimir Miholjević commented after the race: “The lap was very short and dynamic which resulted in huge nervousness. 182 m of difference in height on 7 km of narrow roads made the selection already in the beginning of the race and because of such high difficulty the race ended up being a bit less interesting. We are not satisfied with the result, but the fact is that three riders came directly from Japan and one from the Giro and that also had an impact on our performance today. We expect more from tomorrow’s race, since we have two sprinters in the team.”

“The concept of the race is good,” continues Miholjević, “although the rules are yet to be finalised. When everything is 100 % defined and organised on the highest level, this will undoubtedly become a race format, that is interesting for spectators and also for organisers.”

Manuele Boaro who was the fastest today in our team commented: »The start was fast. We tried to stay in front but there was a big breakaway. We tried to jump inside it but it was not simple, since many teams were in front and the road was narrow. We will concentrate on tomorrow’s and Sunday’s race.«

David Per who was close to Boaro the whole day added: »The race was very fast from the start. The first lap was the fastest and I suffered that lap the most. Unfortunately, we missed the first group and later on our goal was just to finish the race.«

Hammer Sportzone Limburg continues on Saturday with the Hammer Sprint from 15:00-17:15 CET.
