Fast race in Québec

Québec – Friday, September 8th – Grands Prix Cyclistes de Québec started in the heart of the »Ville Capitale«, an outstanding venue of this exciting GP which reminds a little of F1 races, organized through the cities. It’s hilly terrain, perfect for a race like this, and its undeniable charms and gorgeous parks make the Grands Prix Cyclistes de Québec a prestigious race, loved by all riders.

The race suits well to punchers and those used to steep descends. Riders had to make 16 laps, each was 12,6 km long and all together 201,6 km, with an altitude reference of 186 m and altitude difference in total of 2976 m.

Immediately after the start of the race, 5 riders went into a breakaway while BAHRAIN MERIDA riders stayed in the peloton. Riders in the breakaway were strong and fast and stayed in front almost through the whole race. From the beginning, they had 9 min of advantage that later on, some 30 km to finish, decreased to 5 min and slowly continued to minimise. The strongest riders caught them 2 laps before the finish line.

Enrico Gasparotto stayed strong through the last lap and commented today’s performance of the team: »The last lap was not so tough as it was in previous years. BAHRAIN MERIDA was strong and we as a team did a good job. The strategy was to bring Sonny Colbrelli in front for the sprint. I tried to block the competitors. Sonny was, unfortunately, a bit behind and he had to attack from behind.«

»Result is a bit disappointing. On the other hand, riders did the job they had to do. The race was fast the whole day and that is why nobody could attack in the final lap like in the previous years. In the final lap some of our riders were missing a bit of legs but nothing to be worried, we still have a good hope for Sunday,« commented Sports director Philippe Mauduit after the race.

Sonny took 10th place. Peter Sagan is unbeatable for such sprints, commented Enrico Gasparotto, and congratulated him for today’s win.
