Fast finish in London, not a result we hoped for

7th edition of the race took us from Bushy Park to 169km route through Surrey, passing Surrey Hill 5 times and coming back to central London only to finish last 3km passing by Tate Britain, Westminster and going around St. James Park to cross the line at The Mall.

From the start, 3 riders went into the breakaway, but they were never a serious threat to the peloton. 5 laps of Box Hill majority of peloton survived and from that point, it was clear that it will be sprinters race. The last 15km, through a lot of roundabouts and sharp corners it was a fight for positioning. Our team was well-positioned 7km to go and kept it all the way before reaching St. James Park under 2km to go, but at the end, Sonny couldn’t find the ideal path in the last corner, so he didn’t make it to top 10.

Our sports director Rik Verbrugghe said: “It wasn’t the result we hoped for. 40km to go we decided to work for Sonny in the sprint because Phil didn’t feel 100%. Maybe we could do it the other way, but the good thing is we took a decision, so we went with one rider. Maybe Sonny was not top in the final, but I think all guys did a good job, and that is what we have to keep in mind.”

It wasn’t a good result for me or for the team” said Sonny Colbrelli, “I have to thank the guys for the support, but the final was really fast and I didn’t have a good position in the last corner, therefore not a good result.”
