Tuesday, 22nd August 2017 – BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team announced another new rider for the next two seasons – Italian professional road racing cyclist, Domenico Pozzovivo.

Domenico Pozzovivo, age 34 is currently riding for AG2R La Mondiale. He started his professional career in 2005. He became a pure climbing specialist and he is most known for the victory in 8th Stage of the 2012 Giro d’Italia and overall victory in the 2012 Giro del Trentino. Despite his age, this current season is one of the best in his career, with impressive results. He finished 3rd overall at Tour of Alps, 4th at Tour of Swiss, 6th at Giro d’Italia, 6th at Tour de Pologne, 9th at Abu Dhabi Tour and 10th at Tirreno-Adriatico. Currently he is proving his excellent physical form at the Vuelta. He has many significant results to show in his career but results from this year particularly convinced BAHRAIN MERIDA management to sign him and give him the chance to be one of the leaders in 2018 and 2019 as well as supporting his new team-mates in BAHRAIN MERIDA Team. Pozzovivo has also a degree in economics and his high education has earned him the nickname “Dr. Pozzovivo” in the peloton. Such an experienced climber will be a great addition to the team and will surely play an important role in the next two seasons.

Brent Copeland, General Manager of the team commented: “We at BAHRAIN MERIDA are very proud to have Domenico joining our team. He is a rider that we have always admired and believed in and having such a talented climber and GC rider such as Domenico is a signing that is exciting for all of us. He represents everything we look for in a cyclist. He is an extremely dedicated and hard worker and a true professional in all areas as well as a very ambitious rider. On top of this he is a team player that is always willing to work and support others at the same time he is considered to be one of our teams leaders who will be given the opportunity to have his own space in many important races. We want to thank him for his interest and desire in joining our team because without that it would be impossible to have him with us. We are definitely looking forward to working together. I am sure our supporters and team-mates are all just as excited and we all welcome him aboard.”

After signing the agreement with BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team Pozzovivo said: “I am very pleased to be joining BAHRAIN MERIDA who have made a very impressive impact in the WorldTour of cycling in their first year. Living in Switzerland close to Vincenzo Nibali and Enrico Gasparotto has given me the opportunity to learn more about the team and their vision of the project. I was even more enthusiastic and convinced about my decision after speaking with Brent Copeland who explained more about the team projects and what they expect of me and what I can offer them. My decision was not an easy one as I had a few teams I was in talks with but after discussing things openly with my manager Raimondo Scimone it was decided on and I am very pleased to make this announcement. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my present team AG2R who I have been with the past 5 years. It has been a very nice experience riding for them and a special thanks to all the staff and my team-mates, now its time to turn the page and I am looking forward to a new adventure with BAHRAIN MERIDA.”
