Colbrelli leads Team BAHRAIN MERIDA for the EuroEyes Cyclassics Hamburg

One of the most important cycling one-day races in Germany awaits BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team on Sunday, August 19th. The EuroEyes Cyclassics Hamburg – 216,4km starting and finishing in the Germany’s largest port city – will see most of the world’s best sprinters to contest this famous WorldTour race, that debuted on the professional calendar in 1996.

We will head for Hamburg with a strong squad built around our team leader Sonny Colbrelli” says Team BAHRAIN MERIDA Sports Director Harald MorscherWe don’t hide our ambitions to fight for a podium place with him, but the race can be open to other solutions too”.

The 23rd edition of the EuroEyes Cyclassics Hamburg features a new course on the first flat 100km, but remains substantially the same, with then several climbs of the Waseberg (700 meters, 10% average gradient). The last of them is about with 15km to go. A chance for a late attack, but anyway the sprint team can still have enough time to manage the chase.

“It’s a long course and even if its profile is primarily aimed at the sprinters, it’s likely that we will see actions to avoid a bunch sprint. We have a rider like Grega Bole, whose vitories at this year’s Tour of Japan gave him morale and more confidence. I think we can play that card as well” adds Morscher.

Supporting Sonny Colbrelli in Hamburg will be also Kristijan Koren, coming back racing after the Tour de France, with Valerio Agnoli, Niccolò Bonifazio and Ivan Cortina who will be ready to enter on the day’s breakaway. A last-minute change on the line-up: Antonio Nibali will replace Heinrich Haussler, who can’t race at Hamburg due to illness.

The route isn’t easy and we can expect everything” comments Team BAHRAIN MERIDA leader Sonny Colbrelli Hamburg is a race mainly for pure sprinters, but let’s see how the race will unfold. I feel good. I was in great shape in Glasgow at the European Championships and too bad that I had a mechanical problem, otherwise my race could be different. I trained on high altitude during this week and now I’m ready for the second half of the season”.
