“I missed the win for very little – comments Damiano Caruso, today 2nd after a day in the break – but before the end of the Giro I would like to try again. From the team car they told me to go and collaborate with the other attackers and I’m just sorry that I wasn’t able to give the Team the victory”.

“I gave my best and for today I’m happy with my result. It was a special sprint because we came from behind and when I left I felt a little cramping and I couldn’t do more. I am happy for the stage winner the Italian Cesare Benedetti because he is a great worker and deserves this success”.

Caruso was one of the 25 riders that escaped from the peloton in the opening 20 kilometers. The breakaway had an advantage of over 15 minutes on the group and then progressively lost ground. In the final, after the ascent of Montoso (1248m.), five riders remained to contend for the victory in Pinerolo.

Vincenzo Nibali has gained six positions in the overall and is now 5th with a 5.51 gap from the new race leader the Slovenian Jan Polanc.

Tomorrow first mountain stage of this Giro d’Italia with a summit finish above 2000m. After two demanding climbs, the riders will face the last 20km ascent to lake Serrù.
