Hamburg, August 19th 2018 – As is tradition the EuroEyes Cyclassics Hamburg 2018 ends with a sprint. BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team tried to contest it with Niccolò Bonifazio, who fought against some of the world’s best sprinters, as Elia Viviani who repeated his victory in Mönckebergstrasse, beating Démare and Kristoff. TBM Italian rider managed to take a top ten results, sprinting to 9th place.

“We raced according to the team’s strategy” explained Bonifazio “So Sonny tried to attack on the last ascent of the Waseberg to try to reduce the group of the sprinters, but without success. It was a hectic final. I tried to stay at the wheel of Sagan. With 400mt to go I slightly swerved and I lost the position, sprinting to 9th place”.

The race – that is one of the most important cycling one-day cycling event in Germany – starting and finishing in Hamburg after 216.4 km was animated by TBM rider Ivan Garcia Cortina who was part of a long breakaway by five men. They attacked after about 40km and they were caught with 18km to go, before the final ascent of the Waseberg – a climb of 700 meters, 10% average gradient that the peloton had to tackle three times.

Sports Director Harald Morscher’s overview about today’s race: “The race was quite not easy. It was a long distance. We were in the breakaway with Ivan and we know that we could expect a bunch sprint, but our aim was to avoid it. Because our strategy was to try to attack with Sonny in the final and come to the end with a small group. The bunch sprint was very dangerous because the roads were very narrow. Bonifazio came through and survived crashed and he managed to took a 9th place. It was not what we expected, because we wanted to be on the podium, but in the end it’s a top ten result”.
