BAHRAIN MERIDA Pro Cycling Team without Izaguirre on Ruta de Sol

  |   Press

Lucena, February 17th – Ion Izaguirre crashed on 3rd Stage of Vuelta Ciclista a Andalusia. He is injured, but luckily has no fractures. Ondrej Cink and Javier Moreno ended the race with good results.

Today’s Time Trial race began with a sunny weather with a S/W wind of 3 km/h and perfectly dry roads. Our first rider was Yukiya Arashiro (20), followed by Antonio Nibali (29), Ivan Cortina (74), Domen Novak (77), and then the last three of our team – Javier Moreno (129), Ondrej Cink (130) and Ion Izaguirre (138) in a TBM jersey as Spanish time-trial national champion of 2016 and ranked 4th in the overall standing of Ruta de Sol.

After the morning training and inspection, team directors Harald Morscher and Vladimir Miholjević explained that immediately after the start there is a long and continuous climb on a narrow road with cobbled stones in the historic part of City of Lucena. On such climb riders would definitely need lots of watts. Later the downhill starts with narrow road and hard angles which are very risky for all the riders. Last 500m to the finish there was a smooth climb that could be also very hard for the riders because of previous and very intensive kilometers.

Unfortunately after 4.5 km Ion Izaguirre crashed at a crossroad and fell badly. It was a hard crash with thorn skin, he hit his hip and his elbow, but after a medical check in the local hospital and with additional check-up, carried out by Dr. Marijan Koršić, official team doctor, we can confirm that Ion will recover very soon. Unfortunately, Ruta de Sol is over for Ion Izaguirre, but the team is motivated to continue as planned. Everyone on the team expressed full support to Ion and everyone will continue to do their best to finish Ruta de Sol in the best possible way.

Javier Moreno expressed a little disappointment with today’s overall scenario. Ondrej Cink said he is satisfied that he crossed the finish line. He took the 10th place and was happy for his first professional Time Trial debut.
