Adriatica Ionica Race: Phil Bauhaus claims first win in Bahrain Merida jersey
Mestre (Italy), July 24th – The Adriatica Ionica Race opens with a special win for Team Bahrain Merida: Phil Bauhaus took his first victory in Bahrain Merida jersey, sprinting to victory in Mestre, where a spectacular city race circuit took place in the evening.
“It’s always special to take the first win for the team. I waited until now, but I’ve always believed in myself” the German sprinter explains after a tight sprint (with Alvaro Hodeg in second and Sep Vanmarcke in third place) “The lead-out was perfect today. My teammates Sieberg and Haussler did a really good job to put me in a good position in the last laps and in particular in the last corner and then I’ve just had to take a nice one”.
It’s a first win for Franco Pellizotti too, in his case as a Sports Director of Team Bahrain Merida:
“It’s always special to win and feel this emotion again; even if I’m not a rider any more it is always nice. But above all I’m happy for Phil. This season he took many good results, but never a win. The team did everything perfectly and when you win as a team, it is even more beautiful”.
As the first winner of this five-day stage race, Phil Bauhaus is also the General Classification leader and tomorrow he will wear the leader’s jersey on stage two: the “Off-Road Stage”, 189km from Venezia – Favaro Veneto to Grado, featuring six sections of dirty roads.
