A good start with Phil Bauhaus 4th in Beihai
Beihai, October 17th – Tour of Guangxi started with the shortest stage (135.6k) for riders to warm themselves up after a long way travel. It was a sprint stage with only 2 Cat.3 climbs for the competitors of mountain classification.
After 2 loops on the coastal city in Beihai, the fast men and their teammates whittled down the breakaway of 3. Together with UAE Team Emirates, Bora-Hansgrohe and Deceuninck-Quick Step, Team Bahrain Merida were active at the front, working for our sprinter, Phil Bauhaus.
Continuously there were riders fought for their chance after the first trio were reeled in, but could not succeed. In the hectic finish, Phil Bauhaus is our best placed rider, he took 4th place among the top sprinters. It was Fernando Garviria who crossed the line first and now leads the overall by 4 seconds ahead of Pascal Ackermann.
From Phil Bauhaus, our sprinter: “We expected today as a sprint stage. Wang did a good job at the front to bring the breakaway back. Final lap on the climb there were some attacks. The bunch was split. Sieberg and I were in the front group, and Sibi could bring me on the wheels of Ackermann in the last 1.5 kilometer.”
“I was in a good position, just missing a bit of power in the last 3, 4 hundred meters. The sprint was very fast. I was a bit running out of my gear, of my power. No excuse for that. But I think it is a good start with 4th place. We were suffering a little bit with the warm weather today, but we can improve in the next days.”
