A Good Start on Tour of Slovenia with 2nd Place for BAHRAIN MERIDA Team
Kočevje, 15th June – Sonny Colbrelli, with strong help of his teammates, finished 2nd on the opening stage of the 2017 Tour of Slovenia.
The first stage took riders from harbour town Koper on Slovenian coast right onto a Cat. 2 climb Črni Kal, where 9 riders made a breakaway with a 3 min gap. None of our riders were in it, but later they, together with Orica-Scott, Dimension Data and Willier-Triestina, controlled the race. The race changed when entering the final city, Kočevje. Right before the finish line, there was a huge crash. Luckily, BAHRAIN MERIDA riders were not involved in it. With a huge help of his teammates during the whole race, Sonny Colbrelli got a good position and crossed the finish line second, right after Sam Bennett from Bora.
Favourites for the overall classification will start the 2nd Stage in the Slovenian capital tomorrow with the same time.
»Tour of Slovenia opened well for us, with a second place, thanks to all my teammates. They did a great job today and helped me to the final sprint«, said Sonny Colbrelli, who is already looking forward to tomorrow’s stage.
Satisfied Gorazd Štangelj, Sports Director of the Team and someone who knows very well every kilometre of Slovenian roads, commented: »We are satisfied with the 2nd place on the first stage. The team worked very well today and they followed the strategy for today’s stage,« concluded Gorazd.
