3rd place for Niccolò Bonifazio at opening stage in Germany
Bonn, Thursday 23rd August – Opening stage at Tour of Germany from Koblenz to Bonn with 157 km was ideal for sprinters. Streets in Bonn were narrow and we coud see tense sprint in the finish. Heinrich Haussler and Matej Mohoric brought Niccolò Bonifazio to the good position for the sprint but young Columbian from Quick-Step Floors was the fastest today.
Sports Director Tristan Hofmann commented the first stage: »It was good stage for our team. 20 km after the start breakaway with 6 riders split and they were quite strong and fast until the last downhill 10 km to go. Our riders were in peloton for the whole race and brought sprinter Niccolò to the good position for the final sprint. I am satisfied with today’s racing.«
Niccolò Bonifazio commented after the race: »It was fast stage. The course seemed more easy on the paper, instead it was hilly and hard. In the final Matej and Heinrich helped me to find a good position and it was perfect to attack. I took 3rd place and it is a good result to start the race.«
