3 leaders competitive on Willunga Hill

Adelaide, Saturday 20th January – The signature stage of TDU, riders headed for the iconic Willunga Hill twice with spectators cheering all the way to the finish. Gorka Izagirre was the best in BAHRAIN MERIDA Team, he placed 6th. His brother Ion Izagirre finished 9th, while Domenico Pozzovivo at 13th. Gorka, Ion and Domenico are now 7th, 10th and 12th in GC.

Gorka is feeling great after Stage 5 TDU: “It was good to race with BAHRAIN MERIDA team, I am really happy with the new team. The objective was to get into the Top 10. We have 5 people finished at the same time, but I was the 4th one. We have tomorrow the last stage, it would be difficult to get a better position in GC, but we will try.”

From Tristan Hoffman, our sports director: “We started this race with the ambition 3 guys Top 10 in GC, and hopefully we can compete for the stage win. Today we pulled a lot of time back first time on the climb, and we had the right guys in the front in the final, they really did well, but some guys were a little bit stronger.”

“So we have 2 guys in the Top 10, Pozzovivo 12th, but you also have to check the time, because few guys are at the same time. Gorka is now at 7th, but he is at the same time as 4th, if he did a good sprint tomorrow, he could move up some spots, and it’s the same for Ion. Tomorrow we need to try bonifications, it could be difficult, but I have to say the boys are in a good shape.”
