Vincenzo on the attack and Ion moves 7th overall

Balcón de Bizkaia, September 12th 2018 – Vincenzo Nibali is 10th at the end of a long attack . The Italian champion, along with other twenty riders, attacked already after a few kilometers from the start. The breakaway had a maximum advantage of over 8 minutes and then lost something in the finale. On the last climb, the attackers battled and Vincenzo arrived with a 1’48 “gap from the stage winner to the Canadian Michael Woods.

“The sensations are always better – said Vincenzo – and the legs are getting better and better. There were so many quality riders in the break and we immediately got along. Too bad to have lost contact on the last climb, but for me it is important to know that I’m not 100% yet but I’m improving quickly “.

Ion Izagirre has recovered another position in the ranking and is now 7th with 4’09″ gap from the race leader Simon Yates. “It was a pretty good day – the Basque rider commented – because after the rest day and the ITT I was afraid of losing brilliance but instead I was fine”.

“In the last 4 kilometers I lost contact from the red jersey group and I climbed on a regular pace. Even today I have to thank my teammates who hold me in the top positions and do a great job for me. Tomorrow it seems a quiet stage for sprinters but beware that we will cross an area where there is often strong wind “.

Stage number 18 will lead the peloton from Enea de Los Caballeros to LLeida (186km). After a long climbs and ITT, the route of this stage is very easy and without particular difficulties. Very likely a bunch sprint.
