Dubai Tour – ST 1 Palm Jumeirah :: Unlucky crash just before the finish line

Dubai, 31st January – Nakheel Stage 1

The 4th edition of Dubai Tour started today from Dubai International Marine Club. The Stage 1 route guided the riders into Dubai’s desert, passing the Camel Track and Al Quadra Cycling Track, only to come back to the DIMC and finishing at the Atlantis door in Palm Jumeirah.

From the start, five riders took off in a break and held over four-minute lead on peloton. Our team remained compact, sticking together and took the lead with about 50km to go. Everything was set for Sonny Colbrelli to burst into a sprint where he would challenge Kittel, Cavendish and Viviani for the win, but entering the last roundabout at Palm Jumeirah, 3.3km before the finish line, Colbrelli crashed.

Luckily, he dusted him selves and finished the race. Marcel Kittel showed us why he’s considered the favorite yet again, winning a close sprint.

Sports Director Alberto Volpi said after the race: ”Good work from our team in the last 7km. We were in front of the peloton 4km to go, but on the last roundabout where they U- turn, 3.3 km to the finish line, Sonny crashed. If it weren’t for that crash, we would contend for the win. Unlucky…”

Sonny Colbrelli: “I’m happy with the whole ride, I was in the perfect spot before the crash. Not sure what happened, wheel just slipped. I’m ready for tomorrow, no injuries from the crash.”
