Tour de Romandie

April 30th – May 5th

FRIDAY, 03 MAY 2019
Romont > Romont, 160km. Hilly, with uphill sprint finish.

It could have been Colbrelli’s day. A good result after a good performance of all the team, with Jan Tratnik that was in the day’s breakaway and all the other guys very active in the finale. But unfortunately, it wasn’t so. The outcome was different from what everybody expected.
With about 500 meters to go Sonny was in a very good position and he was ready for the uphill sprint, but Brambilla steered into a pole and hit the deck, Zakarin crashed too and Team Bahrain Merida sprinter had to skip the crash, losing his good position and coming to the finish line very angry. His face after the finish said everything.
Team Sports Director Vladimir Miholjević tells how today’s stage unfolded: “It was a hard and fast stage. Our riders followed tactics 100 percent. Tratnik was part of breakaway, gone after 25km of big fight. Jumbo Visma in particular controlled the race and the brakeaway was caught with 17km to go. Sonny was more than ready for a final that could suit him, but 500m to the finish Brambilla and Zakarin crashed in front of him and it was all gone. Too bad!”
