Top ten at the Giro dell’Emilia
Bologna (Italy), Saturday October 6th – Vincenzo Nibali 8th showing improving condition, Domenico Pozzovivo 9th and the great performance of Matej Mohorič. That is what Team BAHRAIN MERIDA take home from this year’s wet Giro dell’Emilia, the one-day race (207.4km) that featured the challenging finishing loop in San Luca, overlooking Bologna.
As tradition the key moment of the race was the final circuit to repeat 4 times. The action started when the day’s breakaway split on the first climb of San Luca. According to the team’s tactics, Mohorič attacked just after crossing the finish line for the first time, then showing his skill on the downhill too. But the man of the day was De Marchi and his move on the second of the five ascents was the decisive one. The Slovenian Champion tried to attack again several times, but without success. De Marchi was able to resist and to take a solo win, ahead of Uran 2nd (+8”) and Teuns 3rd (+9”).
“I must say Matej did a very good race” Team BAHRAIN MERIDA Sports Director Alberto Volpi explains “He rode with intelligence and team spirit. I saw good team work, but unfortunately two riders as Pellizotti and Visconti had a bad day and we missed their help with such a final, that was very tough due to the steep climb and heavy rain”. In fact, on the last ascent to San Luca, some of the best riders from the reduced peloton, including Vincenzo Nibali and Domenico Pozzovivo, moved to try to bridge the gap to De Marchi. “Our captain was in the group and this is something to underline, because he is really improving race after race. He performed well today and the feelings ahead of the upcoming races are good” adds Volpi.
“I feel fine and I had good feelings” Vincenzo Nibali confirms after today’s race “I missed some power, seen that the ascent to San Luca suits rider with high power, like Uran and Teuns, who took the podium indeed, even if their attack was too late to close the gap to De Marchi. He did an amazing race”.
