Team Bahrain Merida to Coppa Agostoni and Coppa Bernocchi

  |   Press

Thursday, September 12th – Another weekend full of racing for Team Bahrain Merida. Our boys will be in action also in Italy, for the opening races of the “Trittico Regione Lombardia”: the ‘Coppa Agostoni’ on Saturday, September 14th and the ‘Coppa Bernocchi’ on Sunday, September 15th.

“We will compete with the same line-up for both races, but see the difference in course and strategies, we will rely on different leaders” TBM Sports Director Alberto Volpi explains “Traditionally ‘Agostoni’ is a tougher one, featuring the selective circuit with the steep climbs of Sirtori, Colle Brianza and Lissolo, that riders have to repeat four times. Therefore, we believe that it can suit a guy like Jan Tratnik very well. He will be our captain, with the support of all the other guys, that can also have their chances, according to how the race will unfold”.

The ‘Coppa Agostoni’ will feature the same traditional course of about 200km, with start and finish in Lissone (near Monza). A demanding one, that will be for sure a test for the riders aiming to the upcoming World Championships, as the ‘Coppa Bernocchi’ the day after.

“A race that suits better pure sprinters” Volpi continues “For this reason our leader will be Phil Bauhaus. He abandoned La Vuelta after the first hard week, but now he feels good and he recovered quite well. He can count on Marcel Sieberg for the sprint and also Tratnik will be important support”.

The nearly 200km course of the ‘Bernocchi’ will feature only some minor changes in the first part and some new intermediated sprints, for a total of 5. Confirmed the traditional circuit of the Valle Olona (16.7km x 6 times), including the ‘Piccolo Stelvio’ ascent and the KOM of ‘Morazzone’. Legnano (North Milan) will host the start and finish as always.

“As a team, we’re the defending champion, seen that our Sonny Colbrelli won it both in 2017 and in 2018. He won’t be there because he is competing in Canada on the same weekend” Volpi concluded “To win it for the third year in a row, won’t be easy. But we’re motivated and we will try to go for it for sure”.

Team Bahrain Merida line-up for ‘Coppa Agostoni’ and ‘Coppa Bernocchi’: Phil Bauhaus, Chun Kai Feng, Andrea Garosio, Antonio Nibali, Marcel Sieberg, Jan Tratnik.
