Sonny Colbrelli took 6th place at the opening stage of Criterium du Dauphiné
Saint Étienne, France, 4th June – BAHRAIN MERIDA Team showed good performance on 1st stage of Criterium du Dauphiné in France with Sonny Colbrelli finishing in 6th place.
170,5 km long stage started today in Saint Étienne on a mild and cloudy day with 10 km/h N wind. Our team’s strategy was to help Jani Brajkovič fight for the GC and to keep eyes on Sonny Colbrelli and help him get a good chance for the final sprint. The whole stage was a hard work, with eight climbs on which the peloton broke in many groups. Antonio Nibali went to the breakaway with 6 more riders and worked well up to last 10 km, as directors Mauduit and Volpi agreed. Sonny Colbrelli showed good performance in the group, waiting and preparing for another successful and challenging sprint.
Thomas De Gendt (Lotto Soudal) and Axel Domont (AG2R La Mondiale) broke further 10 km before the finish and in the final kilometers De Gendt made his solo for a comfortable victory of the first stage.
Sonny Colbrelli said after the race: “It was a hard race today. As a team we did a great race, with Antonio in the break. We caught it in the final kilometers and then did a great teamwork up to the finish line, where I took a decent 6th place. It’s important that my legs are working well. We will try again tomorrow.“
